Brilliant Bugs
Creepy crawly critters!

Below is a full overview of what to expect for our 'Brilliant Bugs' session.

This session is a mix of meeting some amazing critters and learning through activities and crafts.

Session overview

Settings where this can be done:

This session is geared towards younger children, so is ideal for parties, centres, nursery or schools hosting children up to around 11 years. It can be done with more of an educational angle, or more fun play with a bit of learning included.

This session may be quite restrictive and cramped if you would like it done in your own home. As to not make a mess, I will also limit what activities we bring.

At its core:

Children can get hands-on with some amazing insects. We will usually bring 3-4 large exotic insects.

Activities include a range of- matching different kinds of bugs, put the bugs together, dress up, messy play with bugs in slime, colouring mat and more. Learning objectives include- parts of a bug, names of different bugs, what bugs do for us, how big/small can bugs get and identifying insects and arachnids.

One or two of us will attend this session on the day. All artwork present in the activities and crafts is made by ourselves. This includes dress up helmets, which is all hand-made by myself.

Before we start:

We need about 30 minutes to set up this session. We will set up the animals on a table and the activities elsewhere in the room. If there are not enough tables for the additional activities, let us know and we can supply blankets to set up on the floor instead.

We will have quite a lot to unpack, so the closer we are able to park to your chosen premises, the quicker we can set up.

Structure of the session:

We will introduce ourselves and start with meeting some real bugs. For the animal part of session, there are some guidelines which we will talk through:

Please keep the noise down for the animals
Don’t feel forced to interact with an animals if you don’t want to
Please try to remain in your seat or not run around near the animals
Wash your hands after the session is done

These rules are in place for the welfare of the animals and to maintain calm amongst the group. We understand that these may be difficult for some people, so we ask that these individuals are given support by yourselves where needed.

Everyone will be able to interact with the animals, which will come out one at a time. Facts about each of them will be given. This segment will take around 25 mins. The animals will then be packed away and we will go to the different activities. The group can either split up (ideal for larger groups) or stay together, so each activity can be experienced as a group (easier with smaller group sizes).

What we ask of you:

We need one table to set up the animals, as well as a plug socket if you have one. If a plug is not available, then we can use hot water instead. This is to keep our animals at a comfortable temperature.

Tables are preferred for the activities, though if there are no extras available please let us know and we can bring mats and blankets instead.

We also need a space which accommodates us and the size of the group. We prefer indoors, but outdoors is fine too, weather and temperature depending If this is to take place during hot weather, we ask that there is some ventilation available, as high temperatures can be dangerous to some insects.

If the room noise level is too high while we are carrying out the main activities, then information may be missed. While we will always try to keep these segments focused, crowd control is not at the core of our responsibilities, and we would expect those leading the group to bear some responsibility in this.
